Featured Naturalista: Tiffany Macklin


Where are you from?
I am from NC

 What’s something we wouldn't know by looking at you?
I am the mother of 3 beautiful children (1 boy, 2 girls), I love to dance, and write poetry.  I am a lover of all things positive.  I love to have a good time and enjoy family. I am also a Library Assistant.

How long have you been natural?
I have been natural a year now but have been growing my hair out for 9 months.  This is my second time returning to my natural state. I love it.



Did you do the Big Chop or did you transition to natural hair and When?
I big chopped May 16, 2013 this time.  .

Did you have a support system?
Yes my family supports everything that I do.  They are use to me doing different things with my hair so when I wore a fade they loved it.  My friends were supportive.  My most support came from strangers. They were always nice and asked lots of questions. Some were negative but I push those comments to the side because I know people who don't understand African American hair and won't try to understand are the rudest.


What is more important to you - Hair Length or Hair Health?
Hair health and hair length are both important.  I want healthy hair and a big fro. I try my best to take care of my hair and if I feel like I'm lacking in health and growth I read to educate myself.  I am an avid reader.

What are some of your favorite natural hair products?
Right now I am using Cantu products and Kera Care.  I love them.  It works well for my 4b/4c.

What is your natural hair regimen?
I normally do wash and goes every other day and chunky twist out every other week.


What advice would you give to someone who is considering to go natural or a newly natural sista?
I would say just go for it.  Love yourself no matter what.  I've learned that since being natural.

DIY Moisturizing Spray For Locs And Natural Hair

Since I loc’d my hair last year November, creamy moisturizers have been a thing of the past. Anything creamy is the devil to locs because it causes buildup and can even grow mold in the loc (yuck!). So liquid everything has been my choice for hair products. I have been experimenting with natural ingredients to build a moisturizer that WORKS. I wanted a product that left my hair moist and not just for a hot second. I wanted it seal in the moisture and offer shine to my locs, my scalp and my loose natural roots (a few inches). I apply this moisturizing spray to my entire locs and squeeze it into my loc. for my scalp (when retwist not fresh) I spray liberally to my scalp and give my self a soothing scalp massage. My hair and locs love it. This formula would work wonders for loose natural hair as well (it's not just for locs). Below is what I use in my spray and I love it.
