February's Curlkit Un-Boxing

February's Curlkit

There are lots of subscription boxes out there. Much more than I even thought existed. The two with the biggest buzz is Curlkit and Curlbox. I have been stalking their social media to figure out which one to give a try. After much deliberation I chose Curlkit and I am happy I did.

I found a coupon online so I paid $18 instead of $20. There were lots of delays in the shipment of the Curlkits but the owner Heather Cummings kept us updated. I appreciated that. While I waited patiently for my kit I looked at what the February's Culbox looked like and it was a real joke. A box full of Pantene products that I could get down the street. Man, I would have been PISSED!!! On the 21st I finally got my Curlkit and leaped for joy. No Pantene. Lol!

Below is a picture of my goodies. It felt like Christmas. Hehe!

There weren't anything in this box that I have used before. Everything was new to me. That should be the purpose of these boxes. Give you products you have never tried that is not easily accessible and at a reasonable price. Curlkit cost $20 per month and you can cancel anytime.

Below is a list of all the products I got:

Cantu Naturals Creamy Hair Lotion 13.8 oz
Giovanni Smooth As Silk Deeper Conditioner 2 oz
Oyin Burn Sugar Pomade sample
Pooka Mint n' Roses Spa Soak
B's Organic Jamaican Grapeseed Oil 1 oz
Mixed Chicks Trial & Travel Pack ( Shampoo, Deep Conditioner, Leave In Conditioner)
Terry Turban

To be honest with you that box is worth the $20. Just think how much each would cost you to get plus shipping. I will do reviews on these products at a later date. Are subscribed to any hair, beauty or food boxes?

Natural Hair is Fly!!

Natural Hair is FLY!!

Natural hair is FLY! But did I need to say it? We naturalistas know this, those considering to go natural knows this, 'most' men knows this, even permed haired and caucasian girls know it. Shoot, EVERYBODY knows this. Haha!

8 out of 10 times when we see a natural hair sister we turn our heads. Whether she is rocking an Afro, roll tuck and pin, braid out, cornrows or whatever; she is NOTICED. Doesn't it feel good? Being complimented on your Afro feels good because you know you did nothing to achieve it but wake up in the morning. And the good ole question every natural sista have been asked: 'how do you get your hair like that?' No combing or styling and our Natural Hair's Still FLY!

One thing about natural hair that never cease to amaze me is how versatile it is. On no two days does my hair look exactly the same. Every puff is different in length or size on any given day. The same for roll tuck and pins, twist outs, braid outs and Bantu knot outs. AND, if you feel to rock the straight look YOU CAN. Tell a relaxed hair girl to go rock an Afro. Lol! NOT!

I am not knocking relaxed hair or straight hair women. Everybody have their preferences and nobody's choice is better than the other girl. Personally I prefer my natural hair in its kinky texture as it grows from my scalp. Since my big chop. I have fell in love with my hair's texture and the honeymoon is still going strong.

You know your Natural Hair is Fly right?

OBI Naturals Hair Care Product Review

I am happy I got the chance to try these products because I heard good things about them. I looked at their ingredients and instantly got excited. I think you will too. Below is my review and how I used each product.

OBI Natural Hair Product Review

Saponified Oils of Coconut, Palm, Castor bean, Safflower; Shea Butter, Vegetable Glycerin, Purified Water, Rosemary Essential Oil, Sorbitol, Soybean protein, Sorbitan Oleate, Fragrance.

This rich moisturizing shampoo will leave your hair soft, conditioned, and hydrated.  Shea butter deeply moisturizes and repairs damage to hair and scalp, while coconut oil protects hair from heat and chemical damage.

Price: $10

My Review:
Initially I was not looking for a new shampoo as I felt like I already found my staple after trying lots of products. I have eczema so shampooing weekly has to be apart of my routine. I only use Sheamoisture Curl and Shine shampoo because it does not strip my hair. However I decides to give this a try and I am glad I did. It lathered a lot and that's something I love from a no-sulfate shampoo. Ok; so you might not believe me but this shampoo was so moisturizing I could detangle. I finger detangled with this shampoo. When have you ever detangled with shampoo easily? Also, the bar is huge so this will last a long long time. $10 is a very good price considering you will be using it for a long time. I will recommend wrapping the bar in foil paper or plastic bag and storing in a cool place. Do Not store in the shower. I Love this shampoo bar!

OBI Naturals Moisture Cream

Purified Water (Aqua), Behentrimonium Methosulfate and Cetearyl Alcohol, Vitis vinfera (Grape seed) Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil, Argania spinosa (Argan) oil, Gluconolactone and Sodium Benzoate, Arctium lappa (Burdock Root), Lavandula officinalis (Lavender) Oil, Cocos nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Glycine soya (Soybean) Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Oil, Triethanolamine, Fragrance (Parfum).

Use to add moisture and hydration to your hair.  Infused with argan oil, lavender oil, grape seed oil, vitamin E, and burdock root. Promotes hair growth without leaving your hair weighed down

Price: $10.00  4oz

My Review:
I was excited to try this product because I need my hair to be moisturized at all times. The more moisturizing products I have the better. After shampooing with the shampoo bar I conditioned my hair with Herbal Essense Conditioner then apply the OBI moisture cream. The cream is extremely light. My hair sucked it right up and it felt supple and moisturized. My hair remained soft days after. It moisturized my hair and kept it like that for days. I kept touching it. No need to re-moisturize daily.

OBI Naturals Curling Custard

Purified water (Aqua), Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil, Vitis vinfera (Grape seed) Oil, Argania spinosa (Argan) Oil, Carbomer, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Vegetable Glycerin, Gluconolactone and Sodium Benzoate, Triethanolamine, Xantham Gum, Fragrance.

This alcohol-free formula hydrates, elongates, and provides super shine to all types of hair.  Does not leave a waxy residue or buildup. Infused with argan oil, grape seed oil, and olive oil.

Price: $15.00 12oz

My Review:
To me this custard is really a gel. It defines and holds like nobody's business. Lol! An added bonus is that my hair did not have any flakes like I would get with a gel.  I am not a gel person but I its great because its not harsh like regular gels that have alcohols in it. All natural! My edges loved it.

The directions said to use a generous amount but I think I used too much at first so I tried it again. It was still crunchy but that is to be expected from a styler/gel like this. You do not have to use a lot to get great definition from this product. I also recommend applying to wet hair instead of when its damp. The product would be distributed better. If you are a wash and go person this is perfect for you. Perfect wash and go styler.

It left my hair dry and crunchy which I did not like too much because I wash once a week during the winter so I prefer soft hold that don't need me to rewash. I like soft touchable hair. After two days I rewashed with the Shampoo Bar and moisturizes with the moisture cream and my hair was perfect for the rest of the week.

Can't wait for the summer so I can try wash and go styles with this custard. For now its my edge control.

OBI Naturals Hydrating spray

Purified Water (Aqua), Vegetable Glycerin, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Oil, Rose Oil, Cocos nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Soybean Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Gluconolactone and Sodium Benzoate, Triethanolamine, Fragrance (Parfum)

Use daily to moisturize your hair and scalp, or to refresh your style. Infused with argan oil, rose oil, and vitamin E

Price: $10.00  8oz

My Review:
I used this is to refresh my hair in the morning and to rewet when retwisting. The fragrance was a little too much for me. Very very flowery. If you feel like your hair is hard this can bring it back to life. Softened my hair while styling my hair dry.

Natural Hair Care: Shampooing Natural Hair

Shampooing Natural Hair

When you tell natural hair girls to shampoo their hair; they'll grab their bags and run for the hills. Most girls have a No-Poo regimen and remove shampoo from their life all together. In my option, we need shampoo or something of that sorts (that is not a conditioner) to effectively clean our hair and scalps of dirt and product buildup. Its a fact that shampoos can be drying to our Natural Hair. However that doesn't mean you should eliminate shampooing all together. If you had a cup of tea and it taste bad, do you completely stop drinking tea? No, you go and get a different cup. Notice, if you tried a conditioner and it was crap you run right back to the store and try something else. Why can't we do the same with shampoo? Just try and try until you find one that's best for you.

For me personally, I have eczema and washing with a conditioner 100% all the time will result in flaky scalp or white residue. I know I am not the only natural girl that experience this. It doesn't matter how many times you co-wash or what motion technique you use, nothing beats a good shampoo. We NEED a good shampoo in our life!

When looking for a good shampoo for your natural hair you should look for:
• Sulfate-free cleansers to prevent excessive dryness and scalp irritation
• Ingredients to condition your hair while you cleanse
• pH adjusters to balance the pH of the shampoo and prevent unnecessary cuticle damage to your hair

Find a Moisturizing Sulfate-free Cleansers

There are a wider array of shampoos on the market now that have moisturizing agents which conditions while you cleans. Also, at a cost that won't rob your stove of food. Not every natural hair products sells for $20 a pop. Ever wonder why after shampooing our hair feel hair and dry? Sulfates my friend. Sufates have been used in hair products for many years and also the first ingredients in the detergents in your cupboard. Yes, go grab your bottle of Tide or Dawn and take a look. Makes you wonder if you can just use some Dawn and wash your hair. Please Do Not Try that. LOL!

Now we need to learn how to read ingredients (at least a little).

Ingredients to Run Away from:
• Sodium Laureth Sulfate
• Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
• Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
• Ammonium Laureth Sulfate
• Sodium Myreth Sulfate

Gentle ingredients to look for:
• Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate
• Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate
• Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate
• Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate

Try cleansers that promote moisturized hair (even though some marketers falsely advise their products). Please note that not all sulfate-free shampoos feel good on your hair. If your hair feel stripped its not a good shampoo (even if its sulfate-free). Companies like Shea Moisture and As I Am have started to make Conditioning cleansers now so you can try those out too.

My Recommendations:
Shea Moisture Curl and Shine Shampoo
Shea moisture Cowash
As I am Cowash
OBI Naturals Shampoo Bars

I firmly believe that in conjunction with a cowashing regimen we should shampoo at least once per month. How often do you shampoo your natural hair?

THE NATURAL HAVEN: Overnight Conditioning - Your Questions

I always felt like conditioning or hours on end was not necessary. Now I see I am not crazy. Hair to me is like sponge, after its filled with water there is a point where no more water cant get in. That is how I view natural hair and moisture.
